To freeze food, the principles must be followed so that the frozen food remains healthy.

According to ISNA, freezing is an effective way to make perishable items last longer. The freezing process prevents the growth of bacteria, yeasts, and molds that cause food spoilage and food poisoning, but freezing does not kill them. Therefore, it is important to follow a few tips to freeze safely and protect the quality of your food.

First of all, keep your freezer at or below minus 17°C to keep your food safe. Only the quality may be lost with long-term storage in the freezer.

What can you freeze?

You can freeze almost any food except unopened canned foods or eggs in their shells. Therefore, you can safely freeze items such as mayonnaise, cream sauce, and lettuce, but we must know that their quality decreases as they freeze.

Meat, poultry, seafood, and other vegetables are great foods to freeze. Because these foods are perishable and therefore freezing helps to maintain their safety and quality.

Packaging for the freezer

Food should be packed in freezer bags or sealed containers. Squeeze the air out of the bags and leave some free space inside the containers so that there is room in case the food expands. It should be noted that if the moisture of the frozen food is lost, the frozen food can become dry and hard and may suffer from “freezer burn”. Accordingly, to prevent moisture loss, use packages designed for freezing, which include plastic freezer containers, freezer bags or plastic covers, and polyethylene bags and packaging.

Prevent freezer burn

Freezer burn are white, dried spots that appear on the surface of frozen foods. Although freezer burn won’t make you sick, it can make frozen foods like meat and other produce hard and tasteless. Freezer-burnt foods are still edible, and simply remove the freezer-burnt portions before or after cooking.

To prevent freezer burn, you can consider the following points:

Wrap freezer items in heavy freezer paper, plastic wrap, freezer bags, or foil.

– Date all freezer packages and use the oldest food first.

– Make old items easier to access by placing them in front of the freezer.
